Chiang Mai Railway Station first opened in 1922. Initially, the railway line only reached Lamphun. Four years later, in 1926, the line extended to Bangkok. This completed the Northern Line. It connected Chiang Mai to Bangkok. The Northern Line spanned 411 miles or 661 kilometers.

The station we see today is not the original. Allied air strikes destroyed the first station in 1943. This happened during World War II. The rebuilt station reopened in 1948. It continues to serve as a vital transport hub.

Chiang Mai Railway Station sees a lot of traffic. In 2004, it served nearly 800,000 passengers. Today, ten trains operate daily. This excludes the Eastern and Oriental Express. Special trains run during New Year and Songkran.

Inside Chiang Mai Railway Station, modern facilities await. There are ticket counters and ATMs. A café provides refreshments. Passengers can relax in the sheltered waiting area. Free Wi-Fi is available. A taxi stand offers convenient transport. Stalls and shops are nearby. The ticket counter operates from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.

The State Railway of Thailand manages Chiang Mai Railway Station. They oversee train services on the Northern Line. This line also includes the Southern, North-Eastern, and Eastern Lines.

Getting around from the station is easy. The station is located on the east side of the Ping River. It is two kilometers from the city center. You can take a tuk-tuk or a yellow taxi. Expect to pay 100 to 150 THB to the old town. Songthaews are a cheaper option. They usually cost around 40 THB per person.

Many trains travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai daily. Passengers can choose from Rapid, Express, and Special Express services. Travel time ranges from 11 to 14 hours. Second-class sleeper tickets are popular. Booking in advance is advisable, especially during peak season.

A steam locomotive is proudly displayed in front of the station. The Chiang Mai Main Post Office is a short walk away. Turn right and walk for five minutes.
