Founded in the early 20th century it commemorates the visit of the Prince of Wales. Later, he became King George V. Prominent citizens of Bombay established it with government support. The museum’s name changed in 1998 to honor Shivaji. He was the founder of the Maratha Kingdom. This renaming mirrored the city’s transformation from Bombay to Mumbai.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya building itself is a Grade I Heritage Building. It showcases the Indo-Saracenic style. This blends Hindu and Islamic architectural elements. George Wittet designed it after winning an open competition in 1909. His design incorporates elements of Mughal, Maratha and Jain styles. The dome’s design was inspired by the Golconda Fort. The inner vaulting arches echo those of the Gol Gumbaz in Bijapur.
