Doesn’t the air here feel heavy? Right here at Cheung Ek, also known as the Killing Fields, the soil itself whispers stories of immense suffering. Cheung Ek, once a peaceful orchard and Chinese graveyard, became a site of unimaginable horror. Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime transformed this place into an execution ground.

Imagine this: Victims arrived here after being held at the Tuol Sleng prison. They were forced to dig their own graves. Khmer Rouge soldiers, often young and desensitized, brutally murdered them to save bullets. The atrocities committed at Cheung Ek are a chilling reminder of the Cambodian genocide.

After the Khmer Rouge fell, mass graves were discovered at Cheung Ek. They contained the remains of nearly 9000 people. Today, Cheung Ek serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives. The Cambodian government encourages visitors to come and pay their respects.

Dominating the landscape is a Buddhist stupa. Its acrylic glass sides display over 5000 human skulls. Many of these skulls are shattered. It is a stark reminder of the brutal methods used here.

Bones still surface from the earth at Cheung Ek. These remnants serve as a haunting reminder of the past. The government made an agreement with JC Royal Co in 2005 to develop the memorial. This agreement ensures that the remains are not disturbed.

The Killing Fields film portrays events similar to those at Cheung Ek. It helps people understand the scope of this tragedy. Each year on May 9th, Cambodia observes a Day of Genocide.

Walking through Cheung Ek is a somber experience. It is a crucial reminder of the atrocities. It also reminds us the strength of the human spirit. Let us remember the victims of Cheung Ek. Let us strive for a future where such horrors never happen again.
