Right here in Chesterton, we find ourselves in a suburb steeped in history. Chesterton is a place where the echoes of the past resonate with the rhythm of modern life. Let’s embark on a journey to uncover the hidden stories of Chesterton.

Chesterton sits to the northeast of Cambridge. It is on the north bank of the River Cam. This location has shaped its identity over centuries.

Archaeological finds suggest that Chesterton has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Imagine the lives of those early settlers as you explore Chesterton.

In Anglo-Saxon times, Chesterton was part of a larger vill spanning the River Cam. The other part became Cambridge. Chesterton was excluded from the early borough. Chesterton remained distinct for centuries.

The parish of Chesterton included the village and rural areas to the north. It even included Cambridge Castle at the western end. Chesterton was governed by its parish vestry and manorial courts.

Cambridge Borough Council tried many times to annex Chesterton. The people of Chesterton voted against being absorbed into Cambridge three times between 1897 and 1909.

Chesterton Urban District was finally abolished in 1912. The southern part was absorbed into Cambridge. The more rural north was transferred to Milton.

The civil parish of Chesterton was abolished in 1923. All parishes in the borough of Cambridge were united. In 1921, Chesterton had a population of 11,611.

Today, Chesterton is known for its vibrant community. It has excellent transport links and green spaces. East Chesterton is convenient for the science and business parks.

Chesterton has lots of excellent primary schools. Chesterton Community College has been ranked as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Interestingly, a lot of Chesterton used to be orchards before the 20th century. That’s why you will find apple, pear, and plum trees in local gardens.

The name Chesterton means “next to the castle”. The area was the site of Cambridge Castle in Norman times. Now, only the motte and earthworks remain.

In Roman times, Chesterton was settled. Many Roman coins have been found. A silver coin decorated with the head of Romulus was found. It also had Castor and Pollux on horseback on the reverse.

In 2000, a hoard of coins dating back to the 13th century was discovered. The cache included 1,805 silver pennies and nine gold coins.

Today, Chesterton has two electoral wards. They are West Chesterton and East Chesterton. The total population of both wards in 2021 was 18,620.

Buses run frequently to Cambridge city center. They also run to Milton and Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Cambridge North railway station opened in May 2017. It provides direct train links to London.
