Question: Ever notice how some places in Moscow seem to whisper stories of innovation? That’s Chertanovo Severnoye.
Chertanovo Severnoye is a district in the Southern Administrative Okrug of Moscow. It’s one of 125 such districts in the city. This area sits in the south of Moscow.
Chertanovo Severnoye spans 5.4015 square kilometers. In 2010, its population was 111,875. By 2013 estimates showed 113,504 residents. That is a density of about 21,000 people per square kilometer.
As a municipal division, it is the Chertanovo Severnoye Municipal Okrug.
Chertanovo’s history is quite interesting. The name Chertanovo comes from the Chertanovka River. The name’s origin may be Finno-Ugric.
Chertanovo village first appeared in records in 1665. S.A. Belokurov mentioned it in his book. The book was titled “Daily notes of Prikaz of Secret Affairs”. The record notes that the sovereign wished to visit Cheratnovo an hour before dawn. This contrasts with census books in 1646. Those books do not mention Chertanovo. So, the village likely arose between 1646 and 1665.
Several other villages existed within today’s Chertanovo. These include Krasnoe sel`tso and Krasny Mayak sovkhoz. Also Biryulyovo sel`tso and Pokrovskoye selo. Plus, Pokrovskiye Vyselki village. There was also Krasny Stroitel` workmen’s settlement. As well as Mosstroyput` settlement and Annino village.
In 1960, Chertanovo became part of Moscow. This included all land up to the Moscow Ring Road.
Mass housing construction began in the late 1960s. Architects like V. Voznesensky and T. Drozdova designed these buildings. In the late 1970s, they started building the Exemplary Perspective Housing Area. It happened in Northern Chertanovo. M. Posokhin and A. Shapiro were among the architects. In 1980, this area served as an Olympic village. Today, this area is called microrayon Chertanovo Severnoye. It forms part of the Chertanovo Severnoye District.
The northern border of Chertanovo is Balaklavsky Prospekt. The eastern border is the Paveletsky and Kursky railway lines. The Moscow Ring Road forms the southern border. Bitsa Park marks the western edge.
The area is mainly flat.
Two main rivers flow through Chertanovo. These are the Chertanovka and the Gorodnya.
Other rivers include Vodyanka. As well as Krasny creek and Kotlyakovka. Also, Teplyakovsky creek.
Sixteen ponds dot the landscape. Most of them are formed by the two main rivers. These include Bol’shoy Chertanovsky pond. Also, Maly Chertanovsky pond and Verkhny Chertanovsky pond. There is also Krasny pond. As well as Kirovogradskiye ponds and Varshavskiye ponds. Also, Pokrovsky pond, Sobachy pond, and Khrulyov pond.
High-rise buildings dominate much of the area. Buildings range from three to 39 stories. Most are nine or 17 stories tall.
An industrial zone sits in eastern Chertanovo. Many plants are no longer active. Their buildings now serve as offices.
Chertanovo is split into three Moscow administrative districts. These are Chertanovo Severnoye, Tsentralnoye, and Yuzhnoye.
The Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya Line and the Butovskaya Line serve Chertanovo.
Metro stations include Chertanovskaya and Yuzhnaya. Also, Prazhskaya, Ulitsa Akademika Yangelya, and Annino. Lesoparkovaya is on the Butovskaya Line.
Paveletsky and Kursky railway lines run along Chertanovo’s edge. Three railway stations serve the area. Chertanovo rail stop on the Paveletsky line. Pokrovskoye station on the Kursky line. As well as Krasny Stroitel station on the Kursky line.
Four bus parks serve Chertanovo. One of them is the 17th bus park. They service 36 bus routes.
Tram lines also run through Chertanovo along Chertanovskaya Street.
Main roads include Varshavskoye Shosse and the Moscow Ring Road. Also, Chertanovskaya street and Balaklavsky prospekt. As well as Podolskikh Kursantov street.
Parks include Bitsa forest-park and Park of the 30th Anniversary of the Victory. Also, Chertanovskoye podvorye and Pokrovsky park.
Staropokrovskoye cemetery has been here since 1858.
For culture, there is the Theatre “Small theatrical troupe”.
Cinemas include “Cinema park” and “Sezon Cinema”. Also, “Formula Kino”.
Memorials honor those who died during World War II. One is the “Training airfield (fragment) in Cheratnovo”. Another is the memorial complex in Park of the 30th Anniversary of the Victory.
Sports facilities include the Horse-Racing Complex “Bitsa”. Also, the Moscow Center of Martial Arts and FC Chertanovo Moscow.
The 2017 film Attraction used this district as its setting.
Chertanovo Severnoye is more than just a place on a map. It is a place with a past. It has evolved from a small village to a modern Moscow district. As you wander here, remember its layers of history. From its Finno-Ugric roots to its Olympic legacy. It’s a unique corner of Moscow.
