Picture a stream. It’s not just any stream. It’s the Cheonggyecheon Stream Park in downtown Seoul. This 10.9-kilometer-long waterway is more than just a pretty sight. It’s a symbol of Seoul’s history, resilience and urban renewal.

The Cheonggyecheon Stream Park’s story is quite remarkable. This natural stream comes from the Suseongdong Valley. It served as Seoul’s early drainage system. But as Seoul developed rapidly after the Korean War, the stream faced a crisis.

By the mid-20th century, the stream became an eyesore. It was filled with concrete. The Cheonggye Expressway was built over it. What was once a natural waterway became a covered, forgotten part of the city.

Fast forward to 2003. Seoul’s then-mayor Lee Myung-bak launched an ambitious project. The goal was to remove the expressway. They wanted to restore the Cheonggyecheon Stream Park. This was a massive undertaking. The highway was a major traffic artery. The stream was nearly dry after years of neglect.

The city pumped 120,000 tons of water daily. The water came from the Han River, its tributaries and groundwater. They got it from subway stations. This was necessary to bring the stream back to life. The project also faced the challenge of restoring historic bridges. Gwangtonggyo and Supyogyo were important landmarks. People debated whether to replace or restore them.

In September 2005, the Cheonggyecheon Stream Park reopened. It was lauded as an urban renewal success. However, some worried about gentrification. Land prices near the stream increased significantly. They rose much faster than in other parts of Seoul.

Despite the concerns, the Cheonggyecheon Stream Park brought many benefits. The stream created a cleaner environment and new habitats. Biodiversity increased dramatically. Plant species jumped from 62 to 308. Fish species increased from 4 to 25. The number of bird species rose from 6 to 36.

The stream also helps cool the city. Temperatures near the Cheonggyecheon Stream Park are cooler. They are 3.3 to 5.9 degrees Celsius cooler than nearby roads. The restoration reduced air pollution. Respiratory diseases decreased among local residents.

The Cheonggyecheon Stream Park has become a popular destination. Locals and tourists come to enjoy its beauty and tranquility. You can stroll along the stream. You can relax by the water. You can reflect on the stream’s rich history. The Cheonggyecheon Museum tells the story of the stream’s transformation. It showcases scale models and historical photos.

The Cheonggyecheon Stream Park stands as a testament to Seoul’s commitment. It shows the city’s dedication to preserving its natural and cultural heritage. It is an example of how urban spaces can be revitalized. They can be transformed into vibrant, sustainable environments. So take a walk along the Cheonggyecheon Stream Park. Experience the beauty. Appreciate the history. Reflect on the remarkable journey of this urban oasis.
