Wow. Look at that sleek glass facade. That’s the Cheonggyecheon Museum. It’s a stunning building. Its design mimics the flow of water. This is not just any museum. It tells the story of Cheonggyecheon Stream.

The Cheonggyecheon Museum opened in September 2005. Its purpose is to preserve the stream’s history. It commemorates the stream’s remarkable restoration. The stream has flowed through Seoul for centuries. It was even refurbished by Joseon Dynasty kings.

Can you imagine what it was like? The stream was once a vibrant part of daily life. Then during the Japanese occupation it was unsuccessfully covered up. After the Korean War poverty-stricken people made homes there. The area became an eyesore.

The government decided to act. They evicted the residents. They covered the stream with concrete. An elevated highway was built on top. For thirty years the stream disappeared. It was completely hidden from view.

But then things changed. In 2003 the highway was removed. The stream was restored. It cost 386 billion won. This was a massive undertaking. The restoration was completed in September 2005. The museum showcases this incredible transformation.

Inside the Cheonggyecheon Museum you’ll find models. They depict life on the stream’s banks. You will see how the area changed. The models show how construction covered up the stream. Photographs show the highway. At the time it was a symbol of Seoul’s industrialization. It ran for 84 kilometers. It eventually became unsafe.

The museum’s exhibits cover various periods. You’ll learn about the stream’s history during the Joseon Dynasty. You’ll see old maps and documents. There’s even a five-minute video offering a bird’s-eye view.

The final exhibits focus on the ecological changes after the restoration. Plants and animals have returned. The city aims to become more environmentally friendly. The museum shows Seoul’s plans for the future. The museum is more than just a museum. It is a testament to human resilience and urban renewal. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Seoul.
