Hidden amongst Seoul’s vibrant cityscape lies Cheonggwonsa Shrine a tranquil sanctuary steeped in history. Cheonggwonsa Shrine isn’t your typical tourist hotspot. It’s a peaceful retreat offering respite from the city’s hustle. This unassuming shrine holds a captivating story.

Cheonggwonsa Shrine was originally constructed in 1736. King Yeongjo the Great commissioned its building. It was initially named Cheonggwan meaning virtuous conduct. The shrine’s location is significant. It sits below the tombs of Prince Hyoryong and his wife Princess Jeong. Prince Hyoryong was King Taejong’s second son. He was Sejong the Great’s older brother. Interestingly both princes relinquished their claims to the throne. They believed Sejong was the most suitable ruler. Sejong’s reign proved their judgment correct. He became one of Korea’s most powerful and revered kings.

Later Prince Hyoryong became a Buddhist monk. His tomb and his wife’s are atop a hill. They command stunning city views. More tombs of his descendants are further down the hill.

In 1972 Cheonggwonsa Shrine gained recognition. It was designated a Local Tangible Cultural Property. The street in front was renamed Hyoryong-ro in 1985. A wall was constructed around the property in 1986. This wall encloses an area of untouched wildlife. This untamed section with its trees and undergrowth remains undisturbed. It’s a surprising contrast to the carefully preserved shrine.

The shrine’s tranquil atmosphere offers a serene escape. It’s a place to reflect on the past. The site’s history is woven into its very being. The tombs offer panoramic views. The wild area speaks to nature’s resilience. Cheonggwonsa Shrine is more than just a shrine. It’s a living testament to Korea’s rich history and enduring spirit. It’s a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Take a moment to appreciate the tranquility. Let the peaceful atmosphere wash over you. Cheonggwonsa Shrine offers a unique and enriching experience.
