Did you know that the Chennai Metropolitan Area is the fourth-most populous in India? It ranks 35th worldwide. This vast urban sprawl is more than just a city. It is a region of dynamic growth and historical significance.

The Chennai Metropolitan Area. or CMA, is also known as Greater Chennai. It includes Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Ranipet districts. Imagine an area of 5904 square kilometers bustling with over 12 million people. That is the scale of the Chennai Metropolitan Area.

In 1974, the area around Chennai was officially designated as a metropolitan area. It was only 1,189 square kilometers back then. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. or CMDA, was formed to oversee its development. This authority still plays a crucial role. It handles town planning within the metro area.

Over the years, Chennai Metropolitan Area has expanded significantly. Initially, there was a proposal in 2011 by the CMDA. This was due to rapid development in the outer regions. The goal was to incorporate these areas into the planning strategy.

Consider two options suggested in July 2012. The first included Chennai and seven taluks each from Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram. This would extend up to 4,459 square kilometers. The second option was even more ambitious. It included the entirety of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram districts, and Arakkonam taluk. This covered a massive 8,878 square kilometers.

The expansion faced some hurdles. Public objections and litigation slowed the process. However, in October 2022, the Chennai Metropolitan Area finally expanded. It reached its current size of 5,904 square kilometers.

Administratively, the Chennai Metropolitan Area is complex. It includes four municipal corporations. These are Greater Chennai, Tambaram, Avadi, and Kancheepuram. There are also twelve municipalities and numerous smaller panchayats. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is responsible for planning and development. The Chennai Metropolitan Area is divided into three zones. They are the north, central, and south zones.

The State government announced plans for six satellite townships in 2023. These include Minjur, Thirumazhisai, Chengalpattu, Mamallapuram, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. These townships aim to decentralize development.

The Chennai Metropolitan Area. regulates developments through planning permissions. This is under the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act of 1971. Several agencies manage various aspects of the city. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority handles urban planning. Local bodies manage civic affairs. The Chennai MetroWater Supply and Sewage Board deals with water and sewerage. The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority oversees transport infrastructure.

Economically, the Chennai Metropolitan Area is a powerhouse. In 2020, its GDP was estimated at US$ 219 billion. This ranks it among India’s most productive metro areas. Chennai boasts a broad industrial base. Key sectors include automobile, computer, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare. Chennai is often called the “Detroit of Asia”. This is due to its large automobile industry. Chennai is also a major IT and BPO hub. It is India’s second-largest exporter of these services.
