“What’s in a name?” you might ask, standing before the Cheng Yu Tung College. This college bears the name of Dr. Cheng Yu Tung, a Hong Kong billionaire. He was known for his extensive businesses. These included property investment, hotels, and jewellery retailing.

The Cheng Yu Tung College was founded in August 2013. It reflects Dr. Cheng’s legacy. The College Master at its founding was Professor Chung Ling.

Back then, the University of Macau had only one residential college building. It was S9 on Hengqin campus. The Cheng Yu Tung College temporarily shared the building with Moon Chun Memorial College. About 120 freshmen from each college lived there for a year.

In July 2014, the Cheng Yu Tung College moved to its permanent home. That is this very building, W23. Each academic year, it houses around 500 students.

President Xi Jinping visited the Cheng Yu Tung College on December 20, 2014. He joined a discussion with students about Chinese culture. This event highlights the college’s significance.

Cheng Yu Tung College holds over 200 educational projects every year. It aims for a rich cultural environment. It also seeks to create a feeling of humanity and noble aspirations.

Cheng Yu Tung himself had a fascinating life. He fled to Macau in 1940 ahead of the Japanese occupation. He became a goldsmith’s apprentice. Eventually, he married the boss’s daughter. His wealth originated from his jewellery business, Chow Tai Fook. His grandson is set to inherit part of Chow Tai Fook. He is also inheriting the Hong Kong-listed New World group.

Dr. Cheng was a strong supporter of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He helped to steer the development of the CUHK Business School.

Interestingly, a new biography was commissioned by his family in 2016. It sheds light on his personal life and business philosophy. Friends remember him as someone who enjoyed helping others.

Cheng Yu Tung passed away in 2016. He left behind a legacy of diligence and integrity. The Cheng Yu Tung College stands as a testament to his vision. It embodies his commitment to education and culture. It fosters future generations in Macau.
