Founded in 1985 in Chempaka New Village the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge distinguished itself early on. Unlike other religious centers it was managed entirely by lay Buddhist followers. This unique approach fostered a strong sense of community ownership and participation. Bro Liew Chang Huat envisioned a place to propagate the Dharma. The name “Chempaka” carries a special meaning. In Chinese it translates to “encouraging thousands of people to learn the Dharma”.
Initially the lodge operated from a simple residential space. But its popularity soon grew. Within a year increased activities and membership necessitated a larger venue. The committee rented a new space on Pearl Street to accommodate the growing community.
In 1987 the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge achieved official registration. Dharma talks and chanting formed the core of its activities. The lodge also engaged in charitable endeavors. These included medicine donations blood drives and family day celebrations. The Wesak celebration was a particularly important event.
After several relocations the lodge secured a permanent home in 1989. The Selangor State Government granted them religious land at its current location.
Construction began in 1991 fueled by the collective efforts of the community. The Chempaka Buddhist Lodge finally inaugurated its new building. This was a significant milestone at the beginning of the new millennium in January 2000.
Today the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge continues to thrive. It organizes many talks and Dharma classes. These events attract people from all walks of life. The lodge emphasizes early Dharma education for children. This cultivates strong Buddhist values from a young age. They also conduct Dharma classes for the elderly. The comfortable learning environment caters to their needs.
Six specialized units manage various aspects of the lodge’s activities. These include Dharma Propagation Ladies Section Welfare Recreation Youth and Waste Recycle. The Dharma Propagation unit oversees talks classes studies cultivation chanting and the library. The Ladies Section handles food preparation flower arranging and cooking classes.
The Welfare unit provides aid to the needy medical assistance and blood donation drives. The Recreation unit fosters community through interaction and trips. Recognizing the importance of youth the lodge has a dedicated Youth section. This ensures future leadership.
Committed to environmental responsibility the Waste Recycle unit was established in 2000. Its proceeds are channeled into the welfare fund.
From humble beginnings in a residential place the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge has evolved. It now has complete facilities. It effectively fulfills its missions. These are propagating the right Buddhism developing community welfare and building relationships.
Beyond spiritual activities the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge extends its services to the community. It serves as a local community center. Here people can engage in recreational activities. These include Chinese brush painting calligraphy Yuan Ji Kung Zhi Nen Qigong Wai Tan Gong line dancing choir singing karaoke yoga baking and art for children.
The Chempaka Welfare Home shelters children from disadvantaged backgrounds. It provides them with education care and a warm environment. Free traditional Chinese medicine consultations are available. The Distress Fund offers financial aid to those with chronic illnesses. The Funerary Aids Fund supports bereaved families. A Stroke Rehabilitation Centre provides care for the old and infirm.
