Chemical Technology Building

“Established in 1959, you say?” a student’s voice echoed through the halls of the Chemical Technology Building. Right before us stood the unassuming yet significant structure, a cradle of scientific innovation at Chulalongkorn University. The Chemical Technology Building, established on July 14, 1959, holds a special place in Thailand’s history. Born from the Department of Chemistry, it marked the nation’s foray into the world of industrial chemistry. The visionary behind this was Prof. Dr. Tab Nilanithi, the then Dean and Head of the department. He recognized the burgeoning potential of Thai chemical industries and established a dedicated course in industrial chemistry. This course eventually evolved into the Chemical Technology Building. Over six decades, the building has witnessed the evolution of chemical engineering education in Thailand. From its initial focus on ceramic and food technology, it now houses two programs under its chemical engineering curriculum: a standard chemical engineering program and a specialized fuel technology program. The Chemical Technology Building is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a testament to generations of students and faculty who’ve walked its halls. Their contributions to Thailand’s economic sectors, ranging from oil refineries to research institutions, are a testament to the building’s legacy.
