Journey back to 1845. A man named Thomas Rowland, driven by faith and generosity, donated the funds to erect the first Methodist church in Cheltenham. This church would eventually become the Cheltenham United Methodist Church. It stood as a beacon of hope and community. The Cheltenham United Methodist Church served its community faithfully for over a century and a half. The church was more than just a building. It was a place where lives intertwined, where joys were celebrated, and where solace was found in times of hardship. Within its walls, countless souls found their spiritual home. Children learned about faith in Sunday school, couples exchanged vows, and families mourned and celebrated lives lived. Sadly, in June 2008, the final service echoed through the hallowed halls of Cheltenham United Methodist Church. The congregation, carrying their memories and the spirit of community, merged with the Fox Chase United Methodist Church. Although the physical building no longer serves as a place of worship, its legacy lives on in the hearts of those it touched. The records of the church, meticulously preserved, reside at the Old York Road Historical Society. These documents offer a glimpse into the church’s rich past, from administrative meetings to ladies’ auxiliary groups and Sunday school activities. They tell the story of a community bound together by faith and shared experiences.
