Can you believe that a charming little suburb in the heart of Brisbane almost had a very different name? Today, it’s Chelmer, a leafy, riverside haven of Queenslanders and camphor laurels. But in the 1800s, this pocket of land, nestled between the Brisbane River and the bustling city center, was known as Boyland’s Pocket. Thomas Boyland leased the area, a vast expanse of scrubland, with cattle and sheep roaming freely.

Here, overlooking the river, stood the grand old Golf Clubhouse, originally home to the Brisbane Golf Club. It was established in 1896 right here in Chelmer, but it moved to Yeerongpilly in 1903. But the clubhouse remains, a silent sentinel on Honour Avenue, still whispering stories of the past.

The name Chelmer, though, doesn’t seem to have stuck until 1889. After a railway line opened in 1876, the southern bank crossing was named Oxley Point. But in 1881, a siding was built further south, and in 1889, it became the Chelmer station. The origin of the name is a mystery, but it seems to have been inspired by the Chelmer River in England.

Today, Chelmer is a vibrant community, with its bustling high school, Milpera, and its charming community center. The school, a special purpose school catering to students learning English as a second language, sits on the site of a Special School that closed in 1992. The community center, once the Chelmer School of Arts, opened in 1922 and has seen generations of locals gather for dances, talks, and community events.

Chelmer is a place where history and modern life collide, where the past whispers through the grand old homes and the present thrives in the busy streets. This is a suburb with heart, a place where the stories of the past blend into the fabric of the present, making Chelmer truly a place to call home.
