Remember when kings and armies marched through here? This is the story of the Chaumukha Darwaza. It is a gateway that invites us to imagine Delhi’s former glory.
The Chaumukha Darwaza stands in Mehrauli Archaeological Park. It is near the Qutub Complex. This gate is also known as Lal Kot Gate. “Chaumukha” means “four faces”. This name comes from its four openings. This is unusual for a gateway.
The Chaumukha Darwaza dates back to the 14th or 15th century CE. More specifically, it was likely built during the Tughlaq period. It may have been part of Delhi’s oldest fort, Lal Kot. The gate aligns with Lal Kot walls. Today, much of what we see was rebuilt during the Tughlaq period.
Imagine the scene here centuries ago. Kings and their armies passed through this very spot. The Chaumukha Darwaza was more than just an entrance. It was a symbol of power and defense.
The gateway’s design tells us about its purpose. Its massive thickness and battered walls point to the Tughlaq period. The horned outwork and paved stones show it was made for defense. The engraved grid pattern also suggests a defensive function.
The Chaumukha Darwaza is made of rubble masonry. This construction material adds to its robust and sturdy appearance. Its architectural style is unique. The arched openings on all four sides set it apart. This design is not typical for gateways of that time.
Interestingly, some speculate about its origins. It might have been built by Thomas Metcalfe. He may have wanted to enhance his retreat’s elegance. His mansion “Dilkusha” was nearby.
The Archaeological Survey of India has conserved the Chaumukha Darwaza. It is recognized for its high archaeological value. The gate is categorized as Grade B in importance.
Reaching the Chaumukha Darwaza can be an adventure. You might need to walk through tall grass. You may have to jump over broken walls. But the effort is worth it. You will see a piece of Delhi’s rich history.
The Chaumukha Darwaza is more than just a structure. It connects us to the past. It reminds us of the kings, armies, and builders who shaped Delhi. The Chaumukha Darwaza stands as a testament to Delhi’s enduring heritage. This four-faced gateway is a reminder of the city’s layered past.
