Picture this. A sprawling 400-acre residential haven. This is Chateau Woods. Nestled in Montgomery County. Just east of Interstate 45.

Chateau Woods began its story in the 1960s. It started as a subdivision called Lake Chateau Woods. A quiet community. Soon dreams of better infrastructure grew. A civic club formed.

They wanted paved roads. They wanted a better sewer system. So in 1975 the residents voted to incorporate. Leon Kennedy became their first mayor. The village blossomed. A multimillion-dollar sewer system was built. Funded by state bonds. This was a true testament to community spirit.

But the unpaved roads were a constant battle. During dry spells dust clouds billowed. Rain turned the streets to mud. Paving seemed impossible. The sewer bonds needed to be paid off first. Higher taxes were a worry for everyone.

Frustration grew. Residents longed for a solution. By the early 1990s a new movement emerged. People wanted to return to being part of unincorporated Montgomery County. In 1993 they voted to disincorporate. A Municipal Utility District (MUD) was formed to maintain the community’s systems.

The population of Chateau Woods grew over the years. In 1980 there were 590 residents. By 1990 it had increased to 641. By 2000 an estimated 1091 people called Chateau Woods home. A testament to its enduring appeal.

Chateau Woods has always been a place of contrasts. A story of community striving for improvement. Facing challenges and adapting. Yet its spirit never wavered. Today it is a peaceful residential area. Close to the city. Close to nature. A community. That still thrives.
