Château du Karreveld – Kasteel Karreveld

Hidden within Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, a charming municipality of Brussels, lies the Château du Karreveld, also known as Kasteel Karreveld. This castle-farm, a unique blend of architectural styles, stands as a testament to a rich and varied past. Château du Karreveld’s history isn’t just about noble families and sprawling estates. It’s also about the birth of Belgian cinema. In the early 20th century, at the behest of film pioneer Charles Pathé, the first film studio in Belgium was built right here on the grounds of Château du Karreveld. Director Alfred Machin transformed the estate into a hub of cinematic innovation, complete with workshops for set construction and even a mini-zoo for animal extras. Imagine camels, bears, and panthers roaming these grounds, playing their part in the magic of early film. Machin filmed several groundbreaking movies here, including Belgium’s first two feature films: “La Fille de Delft” and the poignant “Maudite soit la guerre”. This latter film, with its hand-painted colors, was a prophetic foreshadowing of the war to come. The municipality of Molenbeek acquired Château du Karreveld in 1930. While a large portion of the original estate was used for urban development, the castle itself and its surrounding park were preserved. The castle underwent significant renovations between 1952 and 1958. Today, Château du Karreveld serves as a vibrant cultural center, hosting events and meetings, and continuing its legacy as a place where history and creativity intertwine. Every summer, the castle grounds come alive with the Festival Bruxellons!. This lively theater festival embraces a variety of performing arts, from magic to music and circus acts. And for jazz enthusiasts, the Blue Flamingo – Jazz Festival offers a series of seasonal concerts, filling the air with soulful melodies. The Château du Karreveld stands as more than just a beautiful building. It is a reminder of Belgium’s vibrant cultural heritage, from its cinematic beginnings to its enduring love for the arts.
