A whispered question hangs in the air who were the d’Hespels? The Château d’Hespel stands before us a testament to a family that rose from soldiers to aristocrats. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of Lille.

This is the Château d’Hespel. It embodies centuries of history. It whispers tales of ambition and nobility. The d’Hespel family’s journey is one of social ascent. It began in Lille in the 15th century.

Our story starts with Walerand Hespel. He was a man-at-arms under Charles the Bold. He died alongside the duke in 1477. Walerand’s descendants established themselves in Lille. They gained bourgeois status in the 16th century. They enhanced their standing by acquiring fiefs. This granted them seigneurial titles.

By 1528 the Hespel family held positions within Lille’s Magistrate. They served as aldermen and bailiffs. They oversaw hospices and charitable works. They acted as legal advisors. They were even rewarts or police commissioners. Hespels appeared 49 times in the Magistrate of Lille.

In 1571 and 1572 Jean de Villers confirmed the family’s ancient nobility. He cited Walerand’s exploits and validated their coat of arms. Letters patent from King Philip IV of Spain in 1663 reaffirmed their noble status.

The d’Hespel family arms evolved over time. In 1663 they were described as a quartered shield. It featured gold with three inverted blue and red lilies. It also included silver with a blue chevron charged with gold. In 1818 King Louis XVIII formalized them. They remained largely unchanged. The Musée d’Orsay holds a blazon bearing the d’Hespel arms created by Émile Gallé.

Two Hespels became Knights of Malta. Another was a Knight of the Royal Order of Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel. One was a Knight of the Order of Alcantara. In the 17th century a family member served in the Chamber of Accounts of Lille. This confirmed their ancient nobility. They were admitted to the Estates of Artois in 1789. Some became religious figures. They were canonesses and barefoot Carmelites.

Before the French Revolution the Hespels held seigneuries over villages near Lille. These included Sainghin-en-Weppes and Fournes-en-Weppes. They established branches like Hespel d’Harponville. They were major landowners in Pévèle and Mélantois. They owned properties around Courtrai in Belgium.

During the 18th century the Hespels belonged to Lille’s aristocracy. Some pursued military careers. Ten Hespels participated in preparatory meetings for the Estates-General of 1789. They elected representatives of the nobility.

During the French Revolution some Hespels joined the émigré army. After the Revolution some branches received the title of Count. In the 19th and 20th centuries Hespels were regional notables. They served as mayors and municipal councilors. Some were general councilors deputies and senators.

Many received the National Order of the Legion of Honor. They fought in both World Wars. Several communes honored their memory with streets and buildings named after them. The family archives once housed in the Château de Fournes-en-Weppes were lost in a fire during World War I.

The d’Hespel family formed alliances with noble French and Belgian families. Today they are among the surviving noble families of France. Many contemporary descendants live in Belgium. Family archives preserve photographs of the Counts d’Hespel.

Today the Château d’Hespel stands as a silent witness. It has seen the rise and endurance of a family. The d’Hespel family shaped Lille’s history. Their legacy remains etched in stone and memory.
