Henriette De Clercq-Crombez. A name whispered with reverence in Oignies. She wasn’t royalty, but her impact on this town rivals that of any queen. Château Declercq stands as a silent testament to her legacy. Henriette, a young widow, arrived in Oignies in 1838, trading the grandeur of Paris for the tranquility of the Nord Pas-de-Calais region. Little did she know, destiny had grand plans for her and this town. In 1841, a simple search for water on her property unearthed something far more valuable: coal. This accidental discovery transformed Oignies from a quiet village into a bustling industrial hub. The mines of Dourges and Oignies blossomed, thanks to Henriette’s vision and the expertise of engineer Mulot. Château Declercq became the epicenter of this transformation. Henriette’s influence extended beyond the mines. She modernized Oignies with gas lighting, a grand ballroom, musical ensembles, and new housing. The unique architecture of Saint Barthélémy Church stands as a testament to her patronage. She wasn’t just a businesswoman, but a philanthropist, caring for the less fortunate. Oignies owes its very identity to this remarkable woman. Henriette died in 1878 at the age of 65, leaving behind an indelible mark. Her legacy lives on, not just in the stones of Château Declercq, but in the heart of Oignies. A monument in the town square, featuring a miner and a woman, symbolizes the town’s gratitude. Henriette’s image graces the obelisk, a constant reminder of the woman who shaped their destiny. Even today, Château Declercq continues to serve the community. After 1945, it was transformed into a rehabilitation center for miners, a fitting continuation of Henriette’s commitment to the people of Oignies. The story of Château Declercq is the story of Henriette De Clercq-Crombez, a woman whose vision and generosity transformed a humble village into a thriving town.
