Nestled amidst the whispers of history, Château de Vernaz stands as a silent witness to the passage of time. Right here, at the entrance, the pillars proudly proclaim “Château de Vernaz”. The term “château” denotes the main house of the village, a central figure in the community’s life. Château de Vernaz has sheltered remarkable individuals within its walls. Two painters, Firmin Massot and Abraham Constantin, graced this very site with their presence, leaving an artistic legacy. In 1818, the estate of Château de Vernaz changed hands. It was sold to Dame Charlotte Elisabeth Comparet. One of her daughters later married the painter Firmin Massot, intertwining the family’s history with the château’s artistic heritage. Although the entrance pavilion where Abraham Constantin resided has been largely demolished, a poignant reminder remains. One wing still stands, bearing a commemorative plaque placed in 1912 by the then-owner. The plaque reads, “Abraham Constantin 1785-1855, painter of the king, citizen of Geneva, lived six years and died here.” In 1910, a Genevan individual purchased the Château de Vernaz estate. The main house underwent restoration, while other parts were sadly demolished. In 1912, Monsieur Eugène Burnat, a pastor and Knight of the Legion of Honour, took ownership of this historic place. Château de Vernaz stands as a testament to the enduring power of history and the lives intertwined with its walls.
