Is it possible for a castle to rise from ashes. The Château de l’Ermitage stands as a testament to resilience. It has dominated the Genevan plain for almost five centuries.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the early 16th century. François-Prosper de Genève-Lullin built this impressive structure. The Château de l’Ermitage became a symbol of power. It was owned by the Dukes of Savoy. Its strategic location overlooking the plain made it a key fortress.

However the Genevese viewed it as a threat. They launched a daring attack on August 31 1589. Captain Guinet led his troops. They captured the Château de l’Ermitage. But victory came at a cost. The Genevese demolished part of it and set it ablaze. The Château de l’Ermitage was left in ruins. For almost three centuries these ruins remained untouched. The villagers even used stones from the fortress to build houses.

Despite its destruction, the ruins became a popular spot. Tourists and Sunday painters visited. They sought inspiration from the crumbling walls and scenic views. The Château de l’Ermitage held a certain allure even in its dilapidated state.

Fast forward to 1855. Messrs Bovet and de Mandrot purchased the Hermitage ruins and grounds. They envisioned a new chapter for the site. On the remains of the feudal keep, they built a manor. This manor featured small towers. It became a hotel and guesthouse. The Château de l’Ermitage offered breathtaking views of Geneva and Lake Léman.

The Château de l’Ermitage hotel became known for its unique features. The square south tower had a Latin inscription. It echoed the Carthusian motto: Nasci Pati Mori. This translates to “to be born, to suffer, to die.” Joseph Dupraz owned the hotel restaurant. Later Charles Porta managed it. Charles was a former Chilean boxer. He was a friend to many athletes.

Charles Porta added recreational facilities to the Château de l’Ermitage grounds. He built a tennis court that transformed into an ice rink in winter. He also constructed a swimming pool. It was the first in the Salève area.

Unfortunately the Château de l’Ermitage faced hardship again. It was nearly destroyed at the end of the 20th century. It was vandalized and squatted in. But a local entrepreneur purchased it. They completed a luxurious renovation. The Château de l’Ermitage was saved.

Standing here we see more than just a building. We see a story of destruction and rebirth. We see the enduring spirit of a place. The Château de l’Ermitage continues to watch over the Genevan plain. It intrigues and fascinates all who visit. Its history may be complex but its beauty is undeniable.
