A laced frozen cascade. That’s how some describe the Château de l’Anglais.

The Château de l’Anglais is a stunning architectural marvel. It sits on the rocky slopes of Mont Boron. Its construction started in 1856.

Let’s explore the history and unique design of this Riviera treasure. The Château de l’Anglais stands as a testament to architectural fusion. It blends Gothic elements with oriental influences. The bright colors and soft curvatures create a ravishing sight.

The Englishman’s Castle. That’s what Château de l’Anglais translates to. It was built by Robert Smith. He was an English officer with a keen eye for design. Smith appreciated the roughness of the Gothic style. He also loved the optimistic Hindu architectural guidelines.

Robert Smith’s story is quite interesting. He was a colonel in the British army. He spent a long time in India. After retiring, he traveled to the Riviera. He bought land on the Cape of Nice. In 1858, he started a colossal project. By 1862 arcades, fountains and gardens appeared.

About fifty workers were permanently employed. They realized this fabulous project. Once built, the château’s style surprised the locals. They were not used to such architectural fantasies. That’s how it was nicknamed “The Englishman’s Castle”.

Inside, salons and boudoirs awaited. There was a smoking room and a billiard room. The dining room had painted ceilings. A dozen bedrooms provided ample space. A staircase of 200 steps led down to the sea.

After Robert Smith, the new owners hosted lavish receptions. However the “Englishman” remained discreet. Today, the Château de l’Anglais is divided into apartments.

Émile Négrin once called it a nightmare for classic architects. Mayrargue praised it as an admirable villa. Stephen Liegeard humorously said it was neither a castle nor a cake.

Caroline Rosso Cicogna has dedicated years to researching the Château de l’Anglais. She resides in the château. Her book tells of its history and the legends surrounding it. She explores the mysteries of its creation.

The Château de l’Anglais is more than just a building. It is a symbol of cultural exchange. It embodies the spirit of the Riviera. It showcases architectural innovation. In 2000, it was listed as a historical monument.

Take a moment to appreciate its unique beauty. Imagine the vision of Robert Smith. He created this marvel. The Château de l’Anglais is a treasure to behold. It remains a landmark in Nice.
