High on a hill overlooking Nice sits the magnificent Château de Gairaut. Do you see how it commands attention? This isn’t just a building. It’s a love letter brought to life. The Château de Gairaut was built between 1900 and 1904 by Joseph Giordan, a millionaire from Nice. He inherited a large plot of land. A more modest structure, modified in 1744, originally stood on the site. But Giordan had grander visions. He wanted to create a paradise for his wife. He instructed the finest craftsmen, “Wherever my wife lays her eyes, she must find happiness.”

The Château de Gairaut showcases beautiful Belle Époque architecture. The design incorporates French Renaissance influences, baroque decorations, and a distinctive octagonal tower. Inside, approximately thirty rooms sprawl across the estate. From the terraces, a breathtaking panoramic view of Nice and the Mediterranean Sea unfolds. Imagine elegant dinners in the dining room, adorned with mahogany paneling. This exquisite paneling was even displayed at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. The Château’s layout centers around a vast atrium. This atrium is covered by a magnificent glass dome. A gallery encircles the atrium on the upper floor, connecting the various rooms. Every ceiling and wall is painted with natural pigments. The billiard room boasts captivating frescoes, some attributed to Jules Chéret and one possibly to Alfons Mucha.

A frescoed interior staircase leads to a small glass dome. This dome is a remnant of an observatory used by Giordan, a passionate astronomer. Following Giordan’s death, German forces occupied the Château de Gairaut. They installed an anti-aircraft battery on its roof during World War II. Giordan’s son, Henri, struggled to maintain the war-damaged Château. After attempts to establish a Belle Époque museum failed, the Château was sold.

After nearly 40 years of neglect, in 1987, advertiser Éric Poisson rescued the Château de Gairaut from demolition. He embarked on a meticulous restoration, respecting its original architecture, decor, and interior ornamentation. While the glass panels were damaged, the frescoes miraculously survived. Poisson collaborated with decorators Jacques Grange and Christian Benais. Grange redesigned the room layout while maintaining the Château’s authenticity. They sourced antique furnishings from the former Hôtel d’Orsay, Sarah Bernhardt’s house, and the Marché Serpette, recreating the ambiance of the early 20th century.

The Château de Gairaut’s park was also revitalized between 1991 and 1993. Landscape architect Alain Goudot recreated gardens, terraces, ponds, cascades, and a rose garden. In 1993, sculptor Bernard Pagès created “La Grande Gloriette”. This 2.65-meter-tall iron sculpture stands by the pool on the Château’s terrace. In 2000, Poisson sold the Château, along with its interior collections, to Russian businessman Sergei Pugachev. Despite legal challenges, Pugachev retained ownership and continued the restoration work. The Château de Gairaut stands as a testament to enduring love, resilience, and artistic vision.
