“Imagine a Flemish dream” architect Charle-Albert might have mused. That dream stands before us: the Château Charle-Albert. Also known as the Flemish House it anchors itself in Watermael-Boitsfort. It stands near the edge of the Sonian Forest.

This is not just any building. The Château Charle-Albert tells a story of ambition. It speaks of survival and rebirth. It represents the enduring allure of Flemish Neo-Renaissance architecture.

Construction on the Château Charle-Albert began in 1870. Architect Charle-Albert designed it. He did not consider the project complete until 1887. He lived here himself for a time. In 1892 the building was sold and became a school for young girls.

From 1933 to 1973, the castle belonged to Belgian Prime Minister Paul van Zeeland. The Château Charle-Albert suffered greatly during World War II. Bombardments damaged it. Van Zeeland’s heirs occupied it until 1981.

The years after the war were not kind. Fires ravaged the Château Charle-Albert in 1981 and 1986. The building was left abandoned. Yet hope flickered. Citizens concerned with Brussels’ heritage rallied. In 1988 they successfully pushed for its classification as a protected site.

In 1990, Immo Charle-Albert acquired the castle. This subsidiary of S.A. CODIC planned to renovate it. They also wanted to add a 3,500 square meter office building to the rear. This project faced resistance from locals. Concerns arose about land use, the environment and traffic.

Later the company sold the Château Charle-Albert to Don Luis Fidalgo. He was a Spaniard from Majorca. Fidalgo aimed to restore the castle to its original glory. He envisioned a blend of living space and offices.

The renovation cost six million euros. The Brussels region contributed 3.15 million euros in subsidies. Work finished in autumn 2014. However the Château Charle-Albert isn’t generally open to the public.

The Château Charle-Albert embodies Flemish Neo-Renaissance style. Charle-Albert drew inspiration from the ideal 17th-century residence. Its design reflects a longing for a romanticized past.

Notice the intricate details of the facade. Imagine the architect meticulously planning each element. Picture the craftsmen carefully executing his vision. Observe the natural Spanish slate roofing. See the seven identical dormer windows. Admire the slate towers. The 800 m2 roof renovation was completed in 2019.

Consider the scale of the renovations undertaken. See the 1,000 m3 of manual earthworks. Think about the earthworks needed for the swimming pool in the cellars. Imagine lowering the general level of the cellars. Picture the restoration of the courtyard of honor. Envision the ironwork of the fence.

The Château Charle-Albert stands as a testament to architectural vision. It also highlights cultural preservation and dedicated restoration. Today it remains a proud landmark in Watermael-Boitsfort. It is a reminder of Brussels’ rich architectural heritage. The Château Charle-Albert continues to inspire awe and admiration.
