Remember their sacrifice. The Chasseurs Ardennais War memorial stands before you. A testament to bravery. A symbol of resilience.

This memorial honors the Chasseurs Ardennais. A Belgian infantry formation. Formed in 1933. Their mission was to defend Belgium’s Luxembourg province. Specifically the Ardennes region. They were considered an elite unit. Made up largely of volunteers from the area. They received modern equipment. More than other Belgian Army units. Their motto Resist and Bite perfectly captured their spirit.

In May 1940 the Germans invaded Belgium. The Chasseurs Ardennais fought fiercely. Despite being outnumbered. They engaged in successful small-scale actions. Against the German Army. They fought bravely. Even after the Belgian Army’s capitulation. Their actions at Bodange on the Sauer River were particularly noteworthy. A small company held off the 1st Panzer Division for a significant portion of the first day. Another company near Chabrehez successfully resisted the 7th Panzer Division.

The Chasseurs Ardennais continued their fight. Even after the retreat across the Meuse River. They suffered heavy losses from aerial attacks. But they fought on. Eventually regrouping and fighting in the Battle of the Lys. Their resistance in Deinze and Vinkt was particularly tenacious. It sadly led to reprisals against civilians. The Vinkt massacre a tragic consequence. Despite the overall outcome the Chasseurs Ardennais maintained their cohesion. Their fighting spirit outlasting many other units.

After the war the traditions of the Chasseurs Ardennais were revived. They participated in numerous international missions. Including peacekeeping operations. And the Afghanistan War. Their legacy is one of courage. Determination and sacrifice.

The memorial is a poignant reminder. Of their bravery and unwavering commitment. Take a moment to reflect on their sacrifices. Let their story inspire you.
