The Charleston Navy Yard Officers’ Quarters Historic District holds a significant piece of Charleston’s history. Established in 1901 it transformed the former Chicora Park. The park designed by the Olmsted brothers was a beautiful public space. Now it’s home to beautifully preserved buildings. These buildings represent the development of senior military housing. They showcase support structures sports facilities and recreational areas from 1901 to 1945.

The oldest structure is Quarters F. Originally built in 1898 it predates the Navy base itself. It served as the superintendent’s house for Chicora Park. The Navy acquired the park and transformed it into the base. This Victorian house was later remodeled to complement the newer buildings. Its Queen Anne features were removed. It now presents a more Colonial Revival look.

The district boasts a variety of architectural styles. Late Victorian and early-20th century designs are represented. These styles include Italianate Neo-Classical Italian Renaissance Revival and Colonial Revival. Even the Works Progress Administration contributed its distinctive Panama House style. There are 24 contributing buildings two contributing sites one contributing structure and one contributing object. The district’s buildings reflect the changing tastes and resources of the era.

Quarters H-I stands out. It’s a striking example of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture. Built in 1905 it originally housed the Commandant and his staff. Its thick brick walls and terra cotta roof are impressive. Porches were added in later years. The building now serves as headquarters for the Charleston Naval Complex Redevelopment Authority.
