In 1908 a new six-room school opened its doors. This was the beginning of Charles W Henry Elementary School. It was a significant event for the Mt Airy neighborhood in Philadelphia. Before this students attended the Carpenter School. The school district named its 374th building after Charles Wolcott Henry. He was a prominent businessman and civic leader.
Charles W Henry Elementary School quickly became a vital part of the community. It served students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school underwent several expansions. In 1949 a new building was added. This housed the gym auditorium and five classrooms. More classrooms were added over the years to accommodate the growing student population. By 2008 the school had sixteen First In Math teams. This program helped students improve their math skills. It also involved parents in their children’s education. Students who excelled received awards and recognition.
Charles W Henry himself was a fascinating figure. Born in 1852 he took over his father’s lumber business. He was also active in municipal affairs. He served on the Common Council and chaired the Fairmount Park Commission. Interestingly he was related to the namesake of another Philadelphia school Houston Elementary School. His wife Sarah Bonnell Houston was the daughter of Henry Howard Houston.
The school building itself has historical significance. The original building from 1908 still stands. It’s a fine example of Georgian and Colonial Revival architecture. The building was even bombed in 1906 while under construction. Yet it stands as a testament to the community’s resilience and commitment to education. Today Charles W Henry Elementary School continues its rich tradition of excellence. It serves as a center of learning and community engagement in the heart of Mt Airy.
