Here stands the Charles-Hallgarten-Schule a testament to innovative educational design. This isn’t just a school. It’s a landmark shaped by visionaries. The Charles-Hallgarten-Schule began its journey in 1913. It started as Frankfurt’s third “Hilfsschule” or special school. Originally it was located on Kleiststrasse. The school bears the name of Charles Hallgarten. He was a generous philanthropist with American roots.
Charles Hallgarten’s story is quite interesting. Born in Mainz in 1838 he later emigrated to America with his family. There they founded the Charles-Hallgarten-Bank in New York. Hallgarten impressed by American philanthropy returned to Frankfurt. He used his wealth for social cultural and democratic causes. His initiatives led to the first “Hilfsschule” in 1889. He died in 1908 and is buried in Frankfurt.
Now look closer at the Charles-Hallgarten-Schule’s architecture. Ernst May a Bauhaus architect designed this building between 1928 and 1929. It opened in 1930. May’s design was groundbreaking. He wanted a school surrounded by nature not a stark institutional building. The Charles-Hallgarten-Schule features a main building running north-south. It has classrooms with terraces and access to gardens. Originally the school had a swimming pool. It was filled in during the 1960s.
The building has served different purposes over time. Initially it was the Röderberg-Reformschule. It was renamed Friedrich-Ebert-Schule upon opening. During the Nazi era it became the Dietrich-Eckhart-Schule. It was used as a military hospital in World War II. The Americans continued using it as a hospital after the war. In 1977 the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule moved. This allowed the Charles-Hallgarten-Schule to occupy this unique building.
Between 1997 and 1999 the city renovated the school. The renovation aimed to restore the original design while meeting modern standards. To honor its namesake the school was officially renamed Charles-Hallgarten-Schule in 2008.
Today the Charles-Hallgarten-Schule is a full-day school. It focuses on students with learning disabilities. It serves as a regional support center. The school provides a range of facilities. These include a sports field a school garden an auditorium and specialized classrooms. The Charles-Hallgarten-Schule embraces outdoor learning. Classes can move outside when weather permits. Despite increased traffic Ernst May’s vision of a school connected to nature persists here at the Charles-Hallgarten-Schule.
