Whispers of history surround us. We stand before the Char-Bakr necropolis a place where centuries sleep.

This sprawling complex five kilometers southwest of Bukhara is more than just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to the Juybari dynasty. Their influence on Bukhara’s religious and political life was immense. Char-Bakr began as a family necropolis. It grew over centuries. The main grave is that of Abu Bakr Saad a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. He is considered the founder of the Juybari dynasty.

Abdullakhan II a Shaybanid ruler gifted the necropolis a grand makeover in 1559. He poured 70000 gold coins into constructing a mosque a madrasah and a khanaka. These three buildings form a stunning architectural ensemble. They create a large courtyard a true oasis of peace amidst the tombs. The mosque’s doors are made of Bukhara pine wood. The verses of Surah Al-Isra are inscribed on its front. The madrasah was considered one of Bukhara’s finest. It has been renovated several times including restorations in 1950 1971 and 1999. The mausoleum stands as the centerpiece. Its doors open on all four sides. A two-story structure it has a domed chamber. Verses 61 and 62 of Surah Al-Baqara are etched onto its facade.

The Char-Bakr necropolis expanded. It includes mausoleums for many khwajas religious leaders. These include Sa’dulla Khoja Akobir Khoja Nasriddin Khoja Abdulaziz Khoja Atoullo Khoja Zaynab Sulton Khoja Obid Khoja and Poshshooyim Khoja. The complex itself covers 40 hectares. The cemetery area alone is 12 hectares. Many structures boast richly decorated polychromatic tiles. Marble gravestones with inscriptions and intricate designs adorn the courtyards.

Burial practices changed. By the 19th century members of the ruling dynasty including women were buried here. Legend has it that if you visit all four mausoleums of the saints named Bakr your wish will come true. This is why Char-Bakr is more than a historical site. It is a place of pilgrimage and hope. The Char-Bakr necropolis breathes history. It invites you to reflect on the passage of time and the enduring legacy of those who rest here.
