The Chapelle Sainte-Julienne is more than just a building. It’s a living story. A story etched in Neo-Gothic and Neoclassical styles. Built between 1884 and 1886 its construction was overseen by the skilled architects Joris Helleputte and J-P Martin. They were commissioned by the Apostolines of the Blessed Sacrament also known as the Dames de Sainte-Julienne.
Helleputte’s influence extends beyond the chapel’s structure. He also designed the elegant beechwood furniture. The chapel’s design reflects the ideas of Jean-Baptiste Bethune. This Courtrai-based architect and decorator shaped its contemporary interpretation of Gothic architecture. The interior is a breathtaking spectacle of stencil paintings. Multi-coloured paintings mimic red brick and white stone. Plisséd draperies add elegance to the imposing paintings. These are beautifully rendered on plaster masonry and canvas.
The main altar crafted from black red and green Mazy marble is a highlight. It complements the polychrome floor tiles and Neo-Gothic furnishings. The semi-darkness within the chapel invites contemplation. The four bays and the triangular choir create an atmosphere of serenity. A Stations of the Cross depicts the life of Saint Juliana of Cornillon. This remarkable woman is the namesake of the chapel. She lived in Liege during the 13th century. Her mission was to establish the Feast of Corpus Christi. A celebration honoring the Blessed Sacrament.
Since 2009 the Chapelle Sainte-Julienne has served as the Romanian Spiritual Culture Centre. It hosts cultural events promoting Romania in Europe. The chapel is not directly visible from the street.
