Beneath the azure sky of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the Chapelle Saint-Pierre stands as a testament to art and faith. This unassuming chapel, nestled on Quai Courbet, holds within its walls a vibrant story. The Chapelle Saint-Pierre, also known as the Cocteau Chapel, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living canvas. It was once a humble fisherman’s chapel, dedicated to St. Peter, their patron saint. After a devastating fire, the chapel served a more practical purpose. It became a storage space for fishing nets and equipment, and even housed the Tribunal de Pêche, the fishermen’s court. Then, in the mid-20th century, the Chapelle Saint-Pierre’s destiny took an artistic turn. Jean Cocteau, a renowned artist, was residing nearby with Madame Francine Weisweiller. With the blessing of the local fishermen, Cocteau transformed the chapel between 1956 and 1957. His vibrant frescoes adorn both the interior and exterior walls, depicting scenes from St. Peter’s life. The Chapelle Saint-Pierre became a fusion of sacred and profane art. Cocteau’s artwork also pays homage to local traditions and scenes, including the Saintes Maries de la Mer and the Demoiselles de Villefranche. Legend has it that Cocteau’s friend, Charlie Chaplin, visited the chapel in 1957. Today, the Chapelle Saint-Pierre remains a cherished landmark. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of art and the unique history of Villefranche-sur-Mer. The Chapelle Saint-Pierre is open from Wednesday to Sunday, offering visitors a glimpse into Cocteau’s artistic vision and the chapel’s rich past. For a small fee of 4€, you can step inside and experience this artistic gem. Children under 15 can enter for free. Remember to book in advance if you’re coming with a group.
