Originally a chapel built within the Saint-Elie mining town in Haisnes Chapelle Saint-Elie stands proudly. It’s located in the Saint-Elie district a neighborhood composed of miners’ dwellings. This area holds a special place as part of the UNESCO-listed mining basin.

Chapelle Saint-Elie’s architecture is simple yet striking. Constructed from brick it features a parallelepiped shape. A two-sloped tile roof covers it. Lateral facades are punctuated by buttresses and numerous semicircular arched openings. These openings have interesting concrete supports. The interior space is remarkable. The timber frame’s trusses are visible. The brickwork itself is a detail worth noticing. The choir section showcases the chapel’s unique character.

In 2018 the municipality requested its desacralization. This opened the way for a fascinating transformation. The building which was once energy-intensive is now undergoing renovation. It will house a Maison France Services a public service center.

The architect cleverly employed a “box within a box” concept. This architectural approach respects and reveals the chapel’s qualities. New functions are integrated within a simple and understated inner box. Contemporary architecture meets the old. The stained-glass windows are enhanced by this contrast.

A central wooden box leaves the existing walls untouched. The play of brick textures the exposed framework and stained glass are revealed. They invite a new interior promenade. Chapelle Saint-Elie’s conversion and renovation into a public facility is a remarkable feat. It shows respect for the past and a commitment to the future. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of the mining heritage. It also speaks to the innovative spirit of Lille.

This transformation isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about preserving a piece of history. It’s about adapting a space for modern needs. It’s about breathing new life into a building with a rich past. Chapelle Saint-Elie is more than just a structure. It’s a story waiting to be discovered. A story of community industry and resilience. It’s a story we can experience together.
