Whispers of healing linger here. This is the Chapelle Notre-Dame des Fièvres. For centuries this humble chapel has stood as a testament to faith and resilience. Its story is woven into the very fabric of Halluin a town just across the Belgian border. The Chapelle Notre-Dame des Fièvres wasn’t always this grand structure. It replaced a much older chapel. This earlier chapel a simple building known as the “Chapelle aux Berlouffes” stood on the site of the legendary Malplaquet. There a linden tree witnessed centuries of history. Under its shade the lords of Halluin dispensed justice. A linden wood statue of the Virgin Mary dated back to 1377. It was housed in the Chapelle aux Berlouffes. This statue miraculously survived the ravages of the French Revolution. It remains a powerful symbol of enduring faith.

The current Chapelle Notre-Dame des Fièvres a striking Art Deco structure bears a resemblance to the abbey at Lophem-les-Bruges. Architect Paul Vilain skillfully blended gothic and Art Deco styles. The chapel’s construction began in 1928. It took three years for this modern marvel to be completed. Cardinal Lienart dedicated the finished building in 1931. The dedication took place on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary a significant date in the Catholic calendar.

The church’s unique design features a Latin cross plan and a tall bell tower. It’s built on stilts a testament to the ingenuity of its construction. The interior is spacious with massive vaults that span the wide nave without the need for supporting columns. This creates a sense of airy openness. Sadly ground movement linked to changes in the water table damaged the original choir. In 1995 a wall had to be erected to secure the area. Only the magnificent crucifix remains. It’s a testament to the Art Deco decoration. The crucifix now sits in the new choir. The façade underwent a major renovation between 2009 and 2010.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame des Fièvres’ history isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s a story of devotion. People came here seeking healing from fevers. They hung cloths or ribbons on the chapel as offerings. This tradition continues to this day. The Chapelle Notre-Dame des Fièvres is more than a place of worship. It is a living link to the past a beacon of faith. It stands as a symbol of hope amidst the changes of time. It’s a place where you can feel the weight of history. You can also experience the quiet devotion of the community that treasures this place. This is a Chapel Notre-Dame des Fièvres. Remember its story.
