Could a simple wish bring forth a chapel? At Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance in Wattrelos, it seems so. This charming chapel, nestled within an 18th-century farm, has a unique origin story. Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance was built following a heartfelt vow concerning the birth of a child. The child arrived safely, and the grateful family fulfilled their promise. Soon, Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance graced the farm. The chapel became a focal point for the community. Every year, on the last Sunday of August, the Harvest Festival brought vibrant life to Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance. A procession wound its way to the chapel, adorned with thousands of wheat stalks. The chapel also served as a resting place for processions during the Feast of the Assumption. While the chapel itself dates back to the 18th century, a date inscribed on the gable, 1864, likely marks the construction of newer outbuildings on the farm. The farm itself offers a glimpse into the past. The oldest part, at the rear left, showcases traditional 18th-century construction techniques of the region. “Rouges barres” brickwork, three rows of bricks alternating with a block of chalkstone, confirms the farm’s origins in the 1700s. Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance stands as a testament to a vow fulfilled, a celebration of life, and a reminder of the rich history woven into the fabric of Wattrelos.
