“Have you ever stepped inside a faithful replica?” The Chapelle des Crêts stands before you a charming testament to architectural history. This isn’t just any chapel. It’s a near-perfect copy of the Swiss Village church from the 1896 National Exhibition in Plainpalais. Geneva’s countryside boasts many such chapels. They showcase the Heimatstil style popular in the early 20th century. The Chapelle des Crêts however is particularly noteworthy. Built in 1905 by Genevan architect Edmond Fatio it opened its doors on December 17th. Notice its neo-Romanesque apse and arched features.
The Chapelle des Crêts wasn’t always as you see it today. In 1955 a renovation project cleaned up the interior. It emphasized the chapel’s Romanesque forms. This wasn’t simply a facelift. It was a restoration of a vital part of the chapel’s architectural soul. The story continues. In 2016 six Bodjol stained-glass windows were added. These weren’t ordinary windows. They were rescued. A nearby ecumenical community center was sold. The new owner removed all the stained-glass windows. But an association dedicated to promoting sacred art acted quickly. They saved this precious cultural heritage. These stunning windows now grace the nave of the Chapelle des Crêts a beacon of light within its walls. They were part of a larger cycle of twenty commissioned by Jean-Jacques Buard. He was then pastor of the Cointrin-Avanchet Protestant parish.
Today the Chapelle des Crêts continues to serve its community. It hosts regular services. Weddings and funerals are held within its peaceful walls. You can contact the secretariat to arrange a visit or a booking. The chapel has a capacity of about 100 people. The rental fee for weddings and funeral services is 500 CHF.
