Hidden within Nice’s Old Town a captivating story unfolds. It is the story of the Chapelle de la Visitation. This unassuming chapel holds centuries of history secrets and devotion.

Originally built in the early 17th century by Clarisse nuns the Chapelle de la Visitation began as Sainte-Claire. These nuns built a convent next to it. This convent stood until the French Revolution. Later during the Restoration King Victor-Emmanuel I of Sardinia gave the buildings to the Visitandine nuns. They renamed the site the Chapelle de la Visitation-Sainte-Claire and the Convent of the Visitation. This explains the possible confusion between the chapel of the Visitation also called Providence and the Chapelle de la Visitation-Sainte-Claire. The proximity of the two sites further complicates matters.

In 1828 the Visitandine nuns commissioned the fresco painter Giuseppe Toselli to decorate the chapel’s interior. His work added to the chapel’s beauty and spiritual atmosphere. The nuns left in 1960. The city of Nice then purchased the buildings. Restoration work began in 1985. The facade was entrusted to Niçois artists Patrice Giuge and Marc Lavalle. They created a stunning facade using the colors and style of Toselli. This remarkable restoration makes the Chapelle de la Visitation one of the most beautiful churches in Vieux Nice.

Today the Chapelle de la Visitation is home to the traditionalist movement of Marcel Lefebvre the Saint Pius X Priestly Fraternity. It is also known as the Saint Joseph Priory. This priory was where Paul Touvier hid before his arrest and conviction in 1994. He was convicted for complicity in crimes against humanity.

The chapel houses beautiful artwork. There are works by Cyril de La Patellière including a Christ on the cross an Ecce Homo and a rare Jesus child. The Stations of the Cross is by the painter Hugo Bogo. It was completed in 2022.

The Chapelle de la Visitation is more than just a place of worship. It is a living testament to Nice’s rich history and enduring faith. It has witnessed centuries of change and devotion. It remains a sacred space a haven of peace and a treasure waiting to be discovered.
