“A sacred relic’s journey,” whispered a voice, “once graced this very ground.” We stand before the Chapelle de la Très-Sainte-Trinité et du Saint-Suaire, a place woven into the fabric of Cannes’ history. This chapel, more than just a building, stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of human connection. The Chapelle de la Très-Sainte-Trinité et du Saint-Suaire is intrinsically linked to the Brotherhood of the Red Penitents, a group whose history intertwines with that of Cannes.

Originally, three separate brotherhoods—the Holy Name of Jesus (founded 1579), the Holy Spirit (circa 1585), and the Holy Shroud (founded 1620)—existed in Nice. Over time, these groups merged, ultimately forming the Brotherhood of the Red Penitents. This unified brotherhood adopted the symbolic red color, representing the blood of Christ. King Charles Felix of Sardinia formally installed the Red Penitents in their current location in 1824. The Chapelle de la Très-Sainte-Trinité et du Saint-Suaire, near the former Senate at the end of Cours Saleya, became their spiritual home. The building itself has undergone transformations. Originally built in 1659 as a chapel for the Visitandine nuns, it was later renovated by Paul-Emile Barberi, a Nice native, in the Baroque style.

Inside, the Chapelle de la Très-Sainte-Trinité et du Saint-Suaire holds remarkable treasures. The high altar features “The Holy Trinity,” a painting by Barberi himself. Another significant piece, dating back to 1660, depicts a dual scene: the Entombment of Christ and an Ostension of the Holy Shroud by angels. This artwork, attributed to either Gio-Gasparo Baldoino or Jean-Gaspard Baudoin, links the chapel to the shroud’s historical significance. The chapel also houses a polychrome wooden processional group portraying the Miracle of Saint Hospice. The legend tells of Saint Hospice, a hermit living in a tower on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula in the 6th century, miraculously saved from a Lombard soldier. This same scene is depicted in a similar sculpture at the Sainte Hospice Chapel in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

The Chapelle de la Très-Sainte-Trinité et du Saint-Suaire stands as more than just bricks and mortar. It represents a continuous thread of faith and devotion woven through the history of Cannes. The Red Penitents, its guardians, continue to uphold their mission. They not only serve the spiritual needs of the community but also contribute to the vibrant cultural life of Cannes. Their annual celebration of the Holy Shroud each May fills the streets with a sense of shared history and tradition.
