Here between Bouvines and Cysoing lies a story etched in stone and faith at the Chapelle-aux-Arbres. This seemingly simple chapel holds layers of history. It stands as a testament to centuries of devotion and remembrance. The Chapelle-aux-Arbres is not just a building. It is a landmark steeped in local lore.

Let’s step back in time to understand the origins of this sacred place. The current structure dates back to 1934. It replaced an earlier calvary. That calvary itself stood on the site of a chapel destroyed in 1794. The destruction occurred because it was seen as a reminder of royal victory. This first chapel’s purpose is shrouded in mystery. Did it mark the spot where Philippe Auguste nearly met his end during the Battle of Bouvines? Was it built on the location of the field altar where the king rallied his troops before the fight? Or did it have no connection to the battle at all? The mystery remains unsolved.

Today, the Chapelle-aux-Arbres stands at the corner of the D90 and the ancient Roman road. This road is known as the chaussée Brunehaut. It leads from Bouvines to Tournai. Its construction reflects the tradition of roadside chapels and calvaries. These structures were built at crossroads. They watched over travelers and pilgrims. They offered a protected and shaded resting place. They served as landmarks. They helped people to stay on the right path in a literal and symbolic sense.

Since its construction in 1934, the Chapelle-aux-Arbres is dedicated to Notre Dame de Bonne Fin. This translates to Our Lady of Good Ending. She is invoked to ease pain and suffering. She helps to bring about happy resolutions. The chapel is also venerated during the procession of Salperwick near Saint-Omer on August 15.

Even now, it is common to see flowers placed against the gate of the Chapelle-aux-Arbres. If it weren’t for the ban on attaching fabric or objects to the door, it would likely be adorned with many such offerings. Graffiti on the walls and surrounding trees are testaments to the ongoing faith. The faith surrounds this small chapel. It is a silent sentinel in the middle of the plain.

Notre Dame de Bonne Fin is one of the many titles associated with the Virgin Mary. Marian devotion is very popular in France. It experienced a revival in the 19th century. This was fueled by a series of apparitions, including those of Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes. Countless oratories, chapels, churches, and niches have been named after specific protections. These protections are linked to miraculous events or places. Thus, Our Lady becomes Our Lady of Sorrows, of the Afflicted, of Good Deliverance, or Notre Dame de la Treille in Lille.

The paved road beside the Chapelle-aux-Arbres connects Bouvines to Camphin-en-Pévèle. This route leads to sector 5 of the Paris-Roubaix. It passes the famous Carrefour de l’Arbre near Gruson. The distance from the Chapelle-aux-Arbres to Camphin-en-Pévèle is approximately 3.85 kilometers. The distance to Bouvines is about 2.15 kilometers.

Across from the Chapelle-aux-Arbres, you can spot several blockhouses. These are part of the northern front of the Maginot Line. However, they were never armed and never became operational.

As you stand before the Chapelle-aux-Arbres, consider its role as a steadfast guardian. It is a place of faith. It is a historical marker. It is a silent witness to the ebb and flow of time in this region.
