Is it a coincidence that the Chapel of the Holy Spirit Saint Francis Theological College has had three different forms? Here at St Francis College in Milton, the chapel stands as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of faith and learning. The original chapel, a humble timber structure, was built around 1870 by Richard George Suter. It served Bishops Tufnell, Hale, and Webber, as well as Brisbane’s first Archbishop, St Clair Donaldson. The need for expansion led to the chapel’s first relocation. Bishop Webber moved it to accommodate an addition to Bishopsbourne. By the time Archbishop Donaldson took residence, the original chapel had deteriorated. Archbishop Donaldson commissioned a new chapel, designed by renowned architect Robin Dods. Constructed with Brisbane tuff from the same quarry as St John’s Cathedral, the chapel featured exposed timber trusses and a slate roof. The Gothic-style windows, with their unique timber shutters, offer a glimpse into the past. Inside, the silky oak-paneled sanctuary and the altar adorned with gilded Australian flora create a serene atmosphere. This second Chapel of the Holy Spirit was consecrated in 1912. The chapel’s third transformation occurred in 1938. Archbishop William Wand, a strong advocate for clergy education, moved St Francis Theological College from Nundah to the Bishopsbourne site. This relocation brought the students and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit together. Interestingly, the college’s former chapel in Nundah was gifted to the parish and became the Church of the Holy Spirit. Inside the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, a triptych above the altar holds a poignant story. One of the shepherds depicted is actually Paul Wand, Archbishop Wand’s son, who tragically died in a mountaineering accident. This image, added in 1938, serves as a lasting memorial. Nearby, a small cross commemorates Ethel Mary Light, Archbishop Donaldson’s Private Secretary. Her ashes are interred within its foundation stone, a testament to her dedicated service. The Chapel of the Holy Spirit Saint Francis Theological College has witnessed countless services, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. It has provided solace and spiritual guidance for generations. Even today, as the college continues to evolve, the chapel remains a cherished space for reflection and prayer.
