Step into the Chaoyang Museum of Urban Planning. Located within Chaoyang Park this museum is surprisingly little known. It’s tucked away in a repurposed factory building. The museum opened in 2010. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the development of Beijing’s most populous district. Chaoyang District is home to almost half of central Beijing. It’s arguably the most important district. It houses nearly all foreign embassies except the Russian one. The main CBD is also in Chaoyang.
The Chaoyang Museum of Urban Planning holds several exhibitions. One exhibition traces the history of Chaoyang District. It highlights the district’s role in agriculture politics and revolutionary activities. Another focuses on urban planning. This section includes wall charts detailing the 13th five-year plan. This plan included infrastructure expansions and air quality initiatives. The museum also features models. These models showcase the Beijing CBD as it was planned and as it exists today. Some models even depict buildings that were never built. These ‘what if’ models provide a unique perspective.
The museum shares its space with a facility called T-Space. This space hosts events like film premieres and fashion shows. During my visit the upstairs section of the museum was closed. This may have been due to COVID restrictions or building maintenance. I noticed multiple ceiling leaks. The museum is open to individual visitors only on weekends. It’s open to pre-arranged groups on weekdays. My Sunday visit was very quiet. The high-tech multimedia elements didn’t seem to be working. I can’t comment on their typical functionality.
The models are the most engaging part of the ground floor. They provide a unique perspective on urban planning in Chaoyang. They’re fun to explore even without fully operational multimedia displays. But these are far less impressive than the larger scale models at the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall. That hall is located near Tiananmen Square. If you’re primarily interested in urban planning models the Chaoyang Museum might not be your top choice. However if you’re in Chaoyang Park looking for a fun weekend activity this museum is worth a visit. It’s housed in a fascinating location a repurposed factory. Remember to check its weekend-only opening times before your trip.
