Chaodong. A town woven into the tapestry of Guilin’s history. It existed as part of Guilin when the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty established the Guilin Shire in 214 BC. This marked the first official mention of Guilin. Chaodong witnessed the digging of the Lingqu Canal, a feat of engineering that connected the Yangtze and Pearl River systems. This canal transformed Guilin into a vital gateway between the Central Plains and the Lingnan Region. The town continued to be a part of Guilin through the dynasties. It saw Guilin flourish as the capital of Guangnan xilu during the Song Dynasty. This era left behind a wealth of ancient rock inscriptions and steles. Chaodong remained part of Guilin during the Ming Dynasty when the Prince of Jingjiang constructed his magnificent palace. It also witnessed the turbulent years of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Guilin, including Chaodong, played a significant role in this conflict. The Yangtang Airfield became a base for the Flying Tigers. These American volunteer pilots bravely fought alongside the Chinese against the invading Japanese forces.
