Journey with me to Chao’an, a district of Chaozhou City in eastern Guangdong Province. Before June 2013, it was known as Chao’an County. Let’s explore its story.

Chao’an once bore the name Haiyang until 1914. It covers a considerable area of 1,238.77 square kilometers. According to the 2020 census, its population is 1,175,150. Chao’an operates under the jurisdiction of Chaozhou.

Over 1600 years ago, during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Haiyang County was established. It was created to administer this area. The name Chaozhou was first used during the Sui Dynasty. Before the PRC, Chaozhou was the political and cultural center of eastern Guangdong.

Chao’an is located in a region with diverse landforms. These include mountains, hills, terraces, and plains. Mountainous and hilly areas are the most common.

Chaozhou is also known for Chaoshan Cuisine. It stands as one of the three main cuisines of Guangdong. They cook seafood and soup skillfully. They maintain the ingredients’ original flavor and fragrance.

The Guangji Gate Wall is a famous attraction. Constructed during the Ming Dynasty, it is a main symbol of Chaozhou.

Chaozhou is the birthplace of the Chinese tea ceremony. The Chaozhou Kungfu Tea is very particular. This includes the tea set, tea, water quality, making, pouring, and drinking.

Chaozhou’s influence extends far beyond its borders. Its dialect, opera, music, and cuisine are recognized. Its embroidery has impacted people at home and abroad. Chaozhou is the hometown of many overseas Chinese.

Chao’an offers a glimpse into China’s past. It showcases the area’s culture. The area contributes to the rich fabric of Guangdong Province. From its delicious cuisine to its cultural exports, Chao’an has left its mark. The district continues to evolve and make its mark on the region.
