Hidden within Brussels, the Chant d’Oiseau, or Vogelzang in Dutch, whispers tales of birdsong and history. Chant d’Oiseau, meaning “birdsong”, perfectly captures the essence of this charming neighborhood. The area, nestled between Woluwe-Saint-Pierre and Auderghem, has been known as Den vogelen sanc (Chant d’Oiseaux) for centuries. This name graces maps as far back as the Van Werden map of 1659 and Antoine Sandérus’ “Regiae Domus Belgicae”. The avenue that winds through the heart of Chant d’Oiseau shares this melodious name. This avenue wasn’t always known by its current name. Before 1841, it bore the less evocative title of “rue de l’Atlas.” Now, as you stroll along Avenue du Chant d’Oiseau, look around. The very streets echo the neighborhood’s namesake. In Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, streets bear names like Cormorans (Cormorants), Aigles (Eagles), and Pinson (Finches). Across the border in Auderghem, you’ll find Canaris (Canaries), Linottes (Linnets), and Paons (Peacocks). The neighborhood is more than just charming street names. The Church of Notre-Dame de la Grâce stands as a beacon in Chant d’Oiseau. Perched atop Avenue de l’Atlantique, this neo-Romanesque church, sometimes called the Church of Chant d’Oiseau, was consecrated in 1949. It houses a monumental organ, crafted by Detlef Kleuker with a magnificent case designed by Jean Marol. This organ boasts nearly 4,000 pipes, adding a majestic layer to the neighborhood’s soundscape. The Franciscans arrived in the Chant d’Oiseau area in 1934, weaving themselves into the fabric of the community. The Chant d’Oiseau neighborhood is a haven. It is bordered by the tranquil Woluwe Park to the east. It extends to Kouter, Valduc, and Avenue Lebon in the south. To the west, you’ll find Drève de Nivelles, and to the north, the Rue and Vallée du Bémel. The Chant d’Oiseau offers a peaceful retreat within the vibrant city of Brussels.
