Ever wonder why there’s a chicken design on the rafters of a gate? Here at Changuimun Gate, you’ll find the answer. This gate stands as a proud testament to Seoul’s history. It’s also known as Northwest Gate. Changuimun is one of the Eight Gates of Seoul. These gates were part of the Fortress Wall of Seoul. The wall once surrounded the entire city during the Joseon period.

Changuimun also has other names. People sometimes call it Buksomun, which means North Small Gate. Others know it as Jahamun. Changuimun’s story began in 1396. That was when it was first constructed. It played a vital role for people leaving Seoul. At that time Seoul was known as Hanyang. People used Changuimun to travel north. Sukjeongmun, the North Gate, mainly served ceremonial purposes. So Changuimun was more important for daily travel.

Sadly, the original wooden gatehouse didn’t survive. It was destroyed during the Japanese invasions in the 16th century. But, it was rebuilt in 1740 or 1741. Today, this rebuilt gatehouse is special. It’s the oldest among the Four Small Gates in the Fortress Wall of Seoul. The name Changuimun has a meaningful translation. It literally means Showing the Correct Thing Gate.

Today, Changuimun is remarkably well-preserved. This makes it stand out among the Eight Gates of Seoul. As you look closely, you’ll spot something interesting. The wooden rafters inside the gate are decorated with chickens. This isn’t just a random design. Chickens were known as enemies of centipedes. It was believed that they would protect the gate.

When you approach Changuimun from the west, notice the tunnel. It looks like a gate itself and leads right up to Changuimun. Feel free to walk through the passageway. You can even go up the stairs. From there, you can view the gatehouse. Please be aware of the laser alarm system. It protects the gatehouse, so don’t get too close.

Near Changuimun, there are memorials. They honor two heroes. Superintendent General Choi Gyu-sik and Assistant Inspector Officer Jung Jong-su. They died defending South Korea during the Blue House Raid in 1968. Their sacrifice is a reminder of the gate’s historical significance. So, take your time here at Changuimun. It is more than just a gate. It is a symbol of Seoul’s resilience, history, and the stories etched into its very structure.
