“Prosperous peace” is what Changnyeong means. Have you ever wondered how this county in South Korea got its name? Today, we explore the story of Changnyeong.

Changnyeong County sits in South Gyeongsang Province. It has a rich history dating back to the Three Kingdoms period. Back then, it was the seat of Bihwa Gaya. Bihwa Gaya was part of the Gaya confederacy. Later, Silla conquered it.

The Nakdong River flows through Changnyeong. This river creates the Upo wetland. The Upo wetland is a significant ecological treasure and a tourist magnet. It’s a must-see if you visit Changnyeong.

Changnyeong Town is the heart of the county. Here, you will find the county government. It’s the largest town in the area.

Changnyeong has seen many changes over the centuries. In 1631, the Yeongsan territory was established. By 1637, Changnyeong territory had joined it.

A major administrative shift occurred in 1895. Changnyeong and Yeongsan became separate counties under Daegu. A year later, they were incorporated into South Gyeongsang Province. This was a big step in shaping the region.

The early 20th century brought more changes. In 1914, Yeongsan County and Changnyeong County merged. They formed 15 townships. Over time, these townships evolved. Changnyeong township emerged in 1918.

In 1936, Namgok township was renamed Namji. Another merger happened in 1955. Changnak township joined Changnyeong township. This consolidation simplified the administrative structure.

Changnyeong township became Changnyeong town in 1960. Namji township also achieved town status in 1963. These upgrades reflected their growing importance.

Changnyeong is divided into towns and townships today. It includes two towns and 12 townships. This structure governs 139 villages.

The Upo wetland is a major attraction. This vast wetland is the largest in Korea. Scientists estimate it formed 140 million years ago. It is home to endangered plants, wild birds, and fish.

The wetlands became a natural monument in 1933, during Japanese occupation. Later, it was designated as Cultural Property 15. After a decrease in migratory birds, the designation changed. In 2001, it became Natural Preserve Area 524.

Bugok Hot Springs is another draw. Discovered in 1973, the hot springs led to a resort. The 48 geothermal wells produce a large amount of water daily. In 1977, Bugok became a national tourist attraction. It boasts hotels, parks, and recreational facilities.

Changnyeong continues to evolve. From ancient kingdoms to modern developments, it holds a special place in South Korea. Its blend of history and nature makes it a unique destination.

As you leave Changnyeong, remember its name. “Prosperous peace” reflects its past and its hopes for the future.
