Lost in the sprawling grandeur of the Changling Tomb I felt a sense of awe. This is the resting place of Emperor Yongle. He was the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty. He also oversaw the construction of the Forbidden City.

Changling Tomb is more than just a tomb. It’s a testament to power. It’s a reflection of the Ming Dynasty’s peak. The tomb is the largest and best-preserved of the Thirteen Tombs. It covers an area of 120,000 square meters. The layout is ingenious. It’s square in the front and round in the back. Three courtyards lead to the circular Treasure City. This is where Emperor Yongle and Empress Xu lie buried.

The entrance is breathtaking. It’s an Alhambra-esque gate. The rafters and arch are made of colored glaze. The first courtyard holds a perfectly preserved stele pavilion. The second courtyard is the most captivating. It houses the Ling’en Palace. This is the only surviving tomb palace from the Ming Dynasty. It’s also unique because it’s made of camphor wood. The palace is enormous. It rests on a three-story white marble pedestal. The ceiling is colorfully painted. Sixteen massive camphor posts support it. The thickest post is thirteen meters high and one meter in diameter. The floor is paved with golden bricks. A lifelike bronze statue of Emperor Yongle sits on a nine-dragon-decorated throne. The palace showcases artifacts. These include portraits of the emperor and empress. The Yongle Encyclopedia is also displayed. This was the world’s first encyclopedia. Pictures illustrate Yongle’s accomplishments. This includes moving the capital to Beijing and building the Forbidden City.

The third courtyard contains more antique buildings. These include the Lingxing Gate. Two dragons adorn its top. A stone table and five offerings are also found there. The Treasure City at the rear is a circular structure seven meters high. It resembles a castle.

This journey through Changling Tomb reveals a story of imperial might. It’s a story of architectural brilliance. It’s a legacy that continues to fascinate. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in Chinese history and imperial architecture.
