Was Changamwe always an industrial hub? Hardly. Changamwe, nestled on the mainland of Mombasa, now hums with the clang of industry. It serves as a gateway to Moi International Airport and houses the Kipevu power generation projects and the Kenya Oil Refinery Company. But rewind to 1945. Imagine this bustling industrial zone as a quiet, perhaps even sleepy, area connected to Mombasa Island by a narrow channel. One morning, the tranquility was shattered. Seven lions, a pride including four cubs, crossed the channel at low tide. They startled residents in the Makupa area, causing panic to ripple through the community. A local resident, Afzal Khan, took action, shooting all seven lions. This incident, though dramatic, highlights Changamwe’s historical connection to the island and its transformation over time. The area, now known for its industrial activity, was once a place where wildlife roamed freely, a far cry from the landscape dominated by power plants and refineries. The story of the lions, recounted by locals, serves as a reminder of Changamwe’s past, before the roar of industry replaced the roar of lions.
