Picture this. You stand before Chancellor Day Hall a majestic 19th-century French Chateau-style mansion. This isn’t just any building. It’s a living testament to Montreal’s rich history. It’s a place where legal minds have shaped Canada’s laws for decades.

Chancellor Day Hall began its life as the James Ross House. Built in 1892 it was one of Canada’s most expensive private residences. Renowned American architect Bruce Price designed it. He’s also famous for the Chateau Frontenac and Windsor Station. The house was made of beautiful yellow sandstone from New Brunswick. James Ross a businessman and philanthropist lived and died within its walls.

His son JKL Ross inherited the house and a considerable fortune. He later spent it all on lavish parties and horse racing. He was forced to sell the house. It was purchased in 1948 by another philanthropist JW McConnell. He gifted it to McGill University.

Initially intended as student housing Chancellor Day Hall became the home of McGill’s Faculty of Law in 1950. The building was renamed to honor McGill’s first Chancellor Charles Dewey Day. The opening ceremony was a grand affair. It was held in the handsomely furnished common room a gift from Maurice Pollack. Many members of the judiciary and the Montreal Bar attended.

But the story doesn’t end there. Chancellor Day Hall isn’t just one building. It’s actually two. Old Chancellor Day Hall the original mansion is now used for administrative and faculty offices. New Chancellor Day Hall a six-story addition built in 1967 houses classrooms a moot court and student services. Both are connected by an underground passage and an atrium which also connects to the Nahum Gelber Law Library.

In 2014 Old Chancellor Day Hall underwent extensive renovations. The heating electrical plumbing and windows were all upgraded. Thirty-four staff and faculty members were temporarily relocated. A plaque commemorating James Ross was unveiled in 2017 near the main entrance.

So next time you pass Chancellor Day Hall remember its fascinating past. Remember the lives shaped within its walls. Remember the legal history that continues to unfold there. It’s more than just a building. It is a significant part of Montreal’s and Canada’s legacy.
