A celebrated bull once obeyed his every command. This is Chaminuka. Who was he? Chaminuka was no ordinary man. He was a prophet. He was a musician. He was a military strategist. He was a spirit medium. Chaminuka was all these things and more.

Today we stand on ground touched by a legend. The legend of Chaminuka. He was a powerful spiritual leader. He advocated for peace. He stands tall in Zimbabwe’s history. He stands alongside Murenga, Nehanda, and Kaguvi.

Chaminuka hailed from Dungwiza. That is the territory of long grass or Chitungwiza. This area lies between the Mupfure and Mhanyami rivers. It extends to Mhondoro and the Hwedza Hills. The soil here is rich. It yields many crops. It provided a good life for its people. Pasipamire lived here. He was Chaminuka’s spirit medium. Pasipamire predicted British colonization. He foresaw a hundred years of subjugation.

As a boy Chaminuka had a special place here in Chitungwiza. It was a rock under a muisha tree. The Shona use this tree for rain-asking ceremonies. They call these mukwerera or marenje. Chaminuka composed music here. He played his mbira. This spot became known as dungwiza raChaminuka.

Colonizers wrongly described him as a minstrel. He was much more. Chaminuka was a mbira maestro. His music was inspired by the Divine. Contemporary musicians keep his legacy alive. Stella Chiweshe honors Chaminuka. Dumisani Maraire also honors him. Thomas Mapfumo immortalizes him in song.

Legends tell of his power over animals. He kept tame pythons. Antelopes roamed his home. Eagles spoke to him. His bull, Mindudzapasi, obeyed his commands.

Chaminuka Rwizi III was born around 1808. His father was Rwizi II, Watambwanaye, chief at Chitungwiza. The Rwizi clan’s totem is Shava Mazarura. That is the Eland.

The original Chaminuka belonged to the vaTovera lineage. Tovera’s son was Mambiri. Mambiri was the father of Murenga Sororenzou. Murenga founded Zimbabwe. He is the guardian of our land. Murenga’s children were Chaminuka and Nehanda. Chaminuka was the father of Kutamadzoka and Chigwangu.

Chaminuka played a key role. His prophet Pasipamire spread peace. He united the African people. Chaminuka’s son, Kutamadzoka, became the First Mutapa. After his death, Chigwangu became Mutapa II. He moved to Great Zimbabwe from Mapungubwe. Chigwangu became known as Rusvingo. That means Builder of Stone Walls.

People traveled far to seek Chaminuka’s advice. They wanted his healing. They craved his blessing. His spirit showed love for humanity. He had compassion for the poor. He lacked malice. He showed no animosity. He never sought vengeance.

Chaminuka’s powers appeared during conflicts with Lobengula. European colonizers invaded from South Africa. They forced clans to migrate. This caused conflicts. Chaminuka sent messages of peace. Lobengula ignored them. He attacked the Shona. He took their land.

Chaminuka prophesied to the Ndebele. He said they would be cursed. They would suffer famine for killing him. Bulawayo has since experienced droughts.

Shona people believe in spirits under one God. That is Mwari. Mhondoro are the most important spirits. Chaminuka was at the top. People approached him through a chief or medium.

The Chaminuka spirit influenced the First Chimurenga. Sekuru Kaguvi and Mbuya Nehanda also influenced it. Later mediums kept Chaminuka’s popularity alive. He inspired early nationalist leaders. They fought colonial oppression.

Chaminuka spoke of prosperity. He spoke of peace. He spoke of goodwill. He united communities. People thrived under his guidance.

The year 1896 brought drought. Locusts plagued the crops. Rinderpest struck the cattle. Chaminuka had foretold these events. He also predicted the downfall of Lobengula. He foretold the arrival of the European Pioneer Column.

He declared that a race of people without knees would come from the sea. They would subdue the Ndebele. They would build white houses. They would bring a mighty boulder. This boulder was the railway line. It was Cecil John Rhodes’ dream.

Chaminuka warned that these people without knees would rule with an iron fist. They would disrespect customs. Their knowledge would entice the young. Traditions would be abandoned. The ancestors would grieve.

Chaminuka’s legacy endures. He is a symbol of peace. He is a symbol of compassion. He is a vanguard spirit of Zimbabwe. Remember Chaminuka. He is more than a legend.
