In 1882, a seed of faith was planted in Harlem, New York. This seed blossomed into what we know today as Chambers Memorial Baptist Church. The church’s story begins with the name Carmel Baptist Church. The congregation, primarily German immigrants, quickly outgrew their initial space. In 1890, a four-story parish house and a new church building were constructed. The church’s name changed to Harlem Baptist Church, reflecting the neighborhood it served. A pivotal moment in Chambers Memorial Baptist Church’s history arrived in 1903 with the arrival of Reverend Adam Chambers. He served as pastor for 18 years. During his time, he transformed the church’s basement into a gymnasium. This was a groundbreaking move. It established Chambers Memorial Baptist Church as the first church in the city to have a gym. Reverend Chambers retired in 1921. The congregation honored his legacy by renaming the church Chambers Memorial Baptist Church in 1934. The 1920s brought demographic shifts to Harlem. African Americans and Latinos began moving into the neighborhood, enriching the diversity of the church. Another significant figure in the church’s history is Reverend Melvin E. Schoonover. He became pastor in 1958. Despite being wheelchair-bound, his dedication was unwavering. Stories tell of him leaving his wheelchair at the bottom of staircases, determined to visit members living in buildings without elevators. He championed accessibility. His efforts led to the construction of a ramp on the side of the church, a feature that remains a valuable asset for the church’s food pantry program. Reverend Ivy J. Cockerham made history in 1965. He became the first African American pastor of Chambers Memorial Baptist Church. Affectionately known as “Doon,” he served the church for 26 years. His contributions extended beyond the church walls. He played a key role in community outreach, working to deter gang violence. Bishop Lawrence E. Edgerton Sr. began his journey at Chambers Memorial Baptist Church as Assistant Pastor in 1986, recommended by Reverend Cockerham. He was ordained as pastor in 1991. Bishop Edgerton inherited a church in need of repair. Rumors of its impending condemnation circulated. However, he was determined to revitalize both the building and the congregation. Under his leadership, extensive renovations transformed the church. A chair lift was installed, new windows brought in light, and the leaky roof was replaced. The once-dark building was illuminated with chandeliers and adorned with marble floors and mirrors. Bishop Edgerton’s leadership has spanned decades. He has continued the church’s legacy of community service, focusing especially on youth outreach. Chambers Memorial Baptist Church stands today as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. Its story is woven from the contributions of many, from German immigrants to influential pastors. The church has not only adapted to the changing demographics of its neighborhood but has also embraced its role as a beacon of hope and support.
